It's wonderful to be here to talk about my journey, to talk about the wheelchair and the freedom it has bought me.
É maravilhoso estar aqui para falar sobre a minha jornada, falar sobre a cadeira de rodas e a liberdade que ela me trouxe.
I started using a wheelchair 16 years ago when an extended illness changed the way I could access the world. When I started using the wheelchair, it was a tremendous new freedom. I'd seen my life slip away and become restricted. It was like having an enormous new toy. I could whiz around and feel the wind in my face again. Just being out on the street was exhilarating.
Eu comecei a usar a cadeira de rodas há 16 anos quando uma doença prolongada mudou o meu acesso ao mundo. Quando comecei a usar a cadeira de rodas, foi uma liberdade tremenda. Tinha visto a minha vida escapar-me e tornar-se restrita. Era como ter um enorme brinquedo novo. Podia girar por aí e sentir o vento no rosto de novo. Só o sair à rua já era arrebatador.
But even though I had this newfound joy and freedom, people's reaction completely changed towards me. It was as if they couldn't see me anymore, as if an invisibility cloak had descended. They seemed to see me in terms of their assumptions of what it must be like to be in a wheelchair. When I asked people their associations with the wheelchair, they used words like "limitation," "fear," "pity" and "restriction." I realized I'd internalized these responses and it had changed who I was on a core level. A part of me had become alienated from myself. I was seeing myself not from my perspective, but vividly and continuously from the perspective of other people's responses to me.
Mas, apesar de ter encontrado esta nova alegria e liberdade, a reação das pessoas para comigo mudou totalmente. Foi como se não me conseguissem ver, como se um manto de invisibilidade me estivesse a cobrir. Eles pareciam ver-me de acordo com suas conceções do que deve ser estar numa cadeira de rodas. Quando eu perguntava às pessoas o que associavam à cadeira de rodas, eles usavam palavras como "limitação", "medo", "pena" e "restrição". Então entendi que tinha internalizado estas respostas e que isso mudou quem eu era a um nível mais essencial. Uma parte de mim havia se alienado de mim mesma. Eu não me estava a ver da minha perspetiva, mas vívida e continuamente da perspetiva das respostas de outras pessoas para mim.
As a result, I knew I needed to make my own stories about this experience, new narratives to reclaim my identity.
Assim, eu soube que precisava criar as minhas próprias histórias sobre esta experiência, novas narrativas para retomar a minha identidade.

I started making work that aimed to communicate something of the joy and freedom I felt when using a wheelchair -- a power chair -- to negotiate the world. I was working to transform these internalized responses, to transform the preconceptions that had so shaped my identity when I started using a wheelchair, by creating unexpected images. The wheelchair became an object to paint and play with. When I literally started leaving traces of my joy and freedom, it was exciting to see the interested and surprised responses from people. It seemed to open up new perspectives, and therein lay the paradigm shift. It showed that an arts practice can remake one's identity and transform preconceptions by revisioning the familiar.
Eu comecei a fazer trabalhos com o objetivo de transmitir algo sobre a alegria e liberdade que sentia ao usar uma cadeira de rodas – uma cadeira poderosa – para superar o mundo. Eu estava a trabalhar para transformar estas respostas interiorizadas, para transformar os preconceitos que haviam moldado a minha identidade quando comecei a usar a cadeira de rodas, através da criação de imagens inesperadas. A cadeira de rodas tornou-se um objeto para pintar e brincar. Quando eu comecei literalmente a deixar traços da minha alegria e liberdade, era estimulante ver as respostas interessadas e surpresas das pessoas. Isso pareceu abrir novas perspetivas, e aí estava a mudança de paradigma. Isso mostrou que uma prática artística é capaz de refazer a identidade de uma pessoa e transformar preconceitos ao rever o que é familiar.
So when I began to dive, in 2005, I realized scuba gear extends your range of activity in just the same way as a wheelchair does, but the associations attached to scuba gear are ones of excitement and adventure, completely different to people's responses to the wheelchair.
Então, quando comecei a mergulhar, em 2005, compreendi que equipamentos de mergulho ampliam o nosso alcance de atividade da mesma forma que uma cadeira de rodas, mas as associações ligadas ao equipamento de mergulho são de entusiasmo e aventura, completamente diferentes das respostas das pessoas à cadeira de rodas.
So I thought, "I wonder what'll happen if I put the two together?" (Laughter) (Applause) And the underwater wheelchair that has resulted has taken me on the most amazing journey over the last seven years.
Então pensei: "O que será que aconteceria se colocasse as duas juntas?" (Risos) (Aplausos) E a cadeira de rodas submarina que resultou levou-me na viagem mais incrível dos últimos sete anos.
So to give you an idea of what that's like, I'd like to share with you one of the outcomes from creating this spectacle, and show you what an amazing journey it's taken me on.

It is the most amazing experience, beyond most other things I've experienced in life. I literally have the freedom to move in 360 degrees of space and an ecstatic experience of joy and freedom.
É a experiência mais incrível, maior que a maioria das coisas que já experimentei na vida. Tenho literalmente a liberdade de me mover num espaço de 360 graus e uma experiência arrebatadora de alegria e liberdade.
And the incredibly unexpected thing is that other people seem to see and feel that too. Their eyes literally light up, and they say things like, "I want one of those," or, "If you can do that, I can do anything."
E o aspeto incrível e inesperado é que outras pessoas parecem ver e sentir isso também. Os seus olhos iluminam-se literalmente, e dizem coisas como: "Eu quero uma dessas" ou: "Se você pode fazer isso, eu posso fazer qualquer coisa".
And I'm thinking, it's because in that moment of them seeing an object they have no frame of reference for, or so transcends the frames of reference they have with the wheelchair, they have to think in a completely new way. And I think that moment of completely new thought perhaps creates a freedom that spreads to the rest of other people's lives. For me, this means that they're seeing the value of difference, the joy it brings when instead of focusing on loss or limitation, we see and discover the power and joy of seeing the world from exciting new perspectives. For me, the wheelchair becomes a vehicle for transformation. In fact, I now call the underwater wheelchair "Portal," because it's literally pushed me through into a new way of being, into new dimensions and into a new level of consciousness.
E eu fico a pensar, é porque naquele momento deles olharem para um objeto para o qual não têm referência, ou que transcende os parâmetros de referência que eles têm com a cadeira de rodas, têm que pensar de uma forma totalmente nova. E acho que esse momento de pensamento completamente novo talvez crie uma liberdade que se espalhe para o resto das vidas de outras pessoas. Para mim, isso significa que eles estão a ver o valor da diferença, a alegria que proporciona quando, ao invés de nos focarmos na perda ou na limitação, vemos e descobrimos o poder e a alegria de vermos o mundo de novas e empolgantes perspetivas. Para mim, a cadeira de rodas torna-se um veículo para transformação. Na verdade, eu chamo a cadeira de rodas submarina de "Portal", porque ela levou-me literalmente a uma nova forma de ser, a novas dimensões e a um novo nível de consciência.
And the other thing is, that because nobody's seen or heard of an underwater wheelchair before, and creating this spectacle is about creating new ways of seeing, being and knowing, now you have this concept in your mind. You're all part of the artwork too.
E outro aspeto é que, como ninguém viu ou ouviu falar de um cadeira de rodas submarina antes, e criar este espetáculo tem a ver com a criação de novas formas de ver, ser e saber, agora vocês têm este conceito nas vossas cabeças. Vocês também são parte da obra de arte.
