My story begins right here actually in Rajasthan about two years ago. I was in the desert, under the starry skies with the Sufi singer Mukhtiar Ali. And we were in conversation about how nothing had changed since the time of the ancient Indian epic "The Mahabharata."
Mon histoire commence exactement ici dans le Rajasthan il y a peu près deux ans. J’étais dans un désert, sous un ciel étoilé avec le chanteur Sufi Mukhtiar Ali. Et nous étions en train de discuter du fait que rien n'avait changé depuis le temps de l'ancienne épopée indienne "The Mahabharata".
So back in the day, when us Indians wanted to travel we'd jump into a chariot and we'd zoom across the sky. Now we do the same with airplanes. Back then, when Arjuna, the great Indian warrior prince, when he was thirsty, he'd take out a bow, he'd shoot it into the ground and water would come out. Now we do the same with drills and machines.
Dans le temps, quand nous les indiens voulions voyager nous montions dans nos chars et filions à travers le ciel. Maintenant, nous faisons la même chose avec les avions. A l’époque, quand Arjuna, le grand prince guerrier indien, quand il avait soif, il sortait un arc, il tirait une flèche dans le sol et l'eau surgissait. Maintenant nous faisons la même chose avec les foreuses et autres machines.
The conclusion that we came to was that magic had been replaced by machinery. And this made me really sad. I found myself becoming a little bit of a technophobe. I was terrified by this idea that I would lose the ability to enjoy and appreciate the sunset without having my camera on me, without tweeting it to my friends. And it felt like technology should enable magic, not kill it.
La conclusion à laquelle nous sommes arrivés est que la magie a été remplacée par les machines. Et cela m'a rendue triste. Et je me suis rendue compte que je devenais un peu technophobe. J’étais terrifié à l’idée de perdre la capacité de jouir et d’apprécier le coucher de soleil sans un appareil photo, et sans le twitter à mes amis. Et j'avais la sensation que la technologie devrait favoriser la magie, non pas la tuer.
When I was a little girl, my grandfather gave me his little silver pocket watch. And this piece of 50-year-old technology became the most magical thing to me. It became a gilded gateway into a world full of pirates and shipwrecks and images in my imagination. So I felt like our cellphones and our fancy watches and our cameras had stopped us from dreaming. They stopped us from being inspired. And so I jumped in, I jumped into this world of technology, to see how I could use it to enable magic as opposed to kill it.
Quand j'étais enfant, mon grand-père m'a offert sa petite montre de poche en argent. Et cette pièce de technologie vieille de 50 ans est devenue pour moi le plus magique des objets. Il est devenu la porte dorée vers un monde de pirates et d’épaves et d'images de mon imaginaire. Alors j''ai eu l'impression que nos téléphones mobiles et nos belles montres et nos appareils photo avaient mis fin à nos rêves. Ils ont mis fin à notre inspiration. Alors j'ai sauté dans ce monde de technologie, pour voir comment je pouvais activer la magie au lieu de la tuer.
I've been illustrating books since I was 16. And so when I saw the iPad, I saw it as a storytelling device that could connect readers all over the world. It can know how we're holding it. It can know where we are. It brings together image and text and animation and sound and touch. Storytelling is becoming more and more multi-sensorial. But what are we doing with it?
J'illustre des livres depuis que j'ai 16 ans. Quand j'ai vu l'iPad, je l'ai vu comme un appareil pour raconter des histoires qui pourrait connecter les lecteurs du monde entier. Il sait comment nous le tenons dans nos mains. Il sait où nous sommes. Il rassemble les images, le texte, les animations, les sons et le touché. Raconter des histoires est devenu de plus en plus multi-sensoriel. Mais nous en faisons quoi ?
So I'm actually just going to go in and launch Khoya, an interactive app for the iPad. So it says, "Place your fingers upon each light." And so -- (Music) It says, "This box belongs to ... " And so I type in my name. And actually I become a character in the book. At various points, a little letter drops down to me -- and the iPad knows where you live because of GPS -- which is actually addressed to me. The child in me is really excited by these kinds of possibilities.
Je vais donc lancer Khoya, une application interactive pour iPad. Elle dit, « Place tes doigts sur chaque lumière. » Et voilà -- (Musique) Elle dit, « Cette boite appartient à ... » Vous entrez votre nom. Et en fait je deviens un personnage de ce livre. A divers endroits, une petite lettre arrive -- et l'iPad sait où j'habite grâce au GPS -- elle m'est donc adressée. L'enfant qui est en moi est tout excitée par toutes ces possibilités.
Now I've been talking a lot about magic. And I don't mean wizards and dragons, I mean the kind of childhood magic, those ideas that we all harbored as children. This idea of fireflies in a jar, for some reason, was always really exciting to me. And so over here you need to tilt your iPad, take the fireflies out. And they actually illuminate your way through the rest of the book.
J'ai beaucoup parlé de magie. Et je ne parle pas de sorciers et dragons, je parle de la magie de l'enfance, ces idées que nous nourrissions quand nous étions enfants. Cette idée des lucioles dans un bocal, pour je ne sais quelle raison, a toujours été passionnante pour moi. Donc ici il vous faut basculer votre iPad, pour faire sortir les lucioles. Et elles éclairent votre chemin sur tout le reste du livre.
Another idea that really fascinated me as a child was that an entire galaxy could be contained within a single marble. And so over here, each book and each world becomes a little marble that I drag in to this magical device within the device. And it opens up a map. All along, all fantasy books have always had maps, but these maps have been static. This is a map that grows and glows and becomes your navigation for the rest of the book. It reveals itself to you at certain points in the book as well. So I'm just going to enter in.
Une autre idée qui me fascinait vraiment quand j’étais petite est qu'une galaxie toute entière pouvait tenir dans une simple bille. Et donc ici, chaque livre et chaque monde devient une petite bille que j’entraine dans cet appareil magique à l’intérieur de cet autre appareil. Et il ouvre une carte. Tous les livres fantastiques ont toujours eu des cartes, mais ces cartes étaient statiques. Voici un plan qui s’agrandit et brille et devient votre instrument de navigation tout le long du livre. Elle aussi se révèle à vous à certains points du livre. Je vais donc entrer.
Another thing that's actually really important to me is creating content that is Indian and yet very contemporary. Over here, these are the Apsaras. So we've all heard about fairies and we've all heard about nymphs, but how many people outside of India know about their Indian counterparts, the Apsaras? These poor Apsaras have been trapped inside Indra's chambers for thousands of years in an old and musty book. And so we're bringing them back in a contemporary story for children. And a story that actually deals with new issues like the environmental crisis. (Music)
Une autre chose que je trouve très importante c’est de créer un contenu qui soit indien et très contemporain en même temps. Là vous avez les Apsaras. Nous avons tous entendu parler des fées et des nymphes, mais qui en dehors de l’Inde connait leurs homologues indiens, les Apsaras ? Ces pauvres Apsaras sont restés piégés dans les chambres d’Indra pendant des milliers d’années dans un vieux livre moisi. Nous les réveillons donc dans une histoire contemporaine pour enfants. Et une histoire qui traite de nouveaux problèmes comme la crise environnementale. (Musique)
Speaking of the environmental crisis, I think a big problem has been in the last 10 years is that children have been locked inside their rooms, glued to their PCs, they haven't been able to get out. But now with mobile technology, we can actually take our children outside into the natural world with their technology. One of the interactions in the book is that you're sent off on this quest where you need to go outside, take out your camera on the iPad and collect pictures of different natural objects.
À propos de crise environnementale, je crois qu’un gros problème de ces 10 dernières années est que les enfants se sont tellement renfermés dans leurs chambres, collés à leur ordinateur, qu’ils ne sortent plus. Mais maintenant avec la technologie mobile, nous pouvons emmener nos enfants dans la nature avec leur technologie. Une des interactions dans le livre c’est de vous envoyer en mission où il faut aller dehors, sortir l'appareil photo de votre iPad et rassembler des photos de différents objets naturels.
When I was a child, I had multiple collections of sticks and stones and pebbles and shells. And somehow kids don't do that anymore. So in bringing back this childhood ritual, you need to go out and, in one chapter, take a picture of a flower and then tag it. In another chapter, you need to take a picture of a piece of bark and then tag that. And what happens is that you actually create a digital collection of photographs that you can then put up online. A child in London puts up a picture of a fox and says, "Oh, I saw a fox today." A child in India says, "I saw a monkey today." And it creates this kind of social network around a collection of digital photographs that you've actually taken.
Quand j’étais enfant, j’avais plusieurs collections de bâtons, de cailloux, de galets et de coquillages. Et en quelque sorte, les enfants ne le font plus. En rappelant ce rituel de l’enfance il faut sortir et, dans un des chapitres, prendre une fleur en photo et l’étiqueter. Dans un autre chapitre, il faut prendre en photo un morceau d’écorce et l’étiqueter. Et ce qui se passe c’est que vous créez en fait une collection de photos numériques que vous pouvez ensuite mettre en ligne. Un gamin à Londres met la photo d’un renard et dit, « Oh, j’ai vu un renard aujourd’hui. » Un enfant en Inde dit, « J’ai vu un singe aujourd’hui. » Et une sorte de réseau social se forme autour d’une collection de photos numériques que vous avez vraiment prises.
In the possibilities of linking together magic, the earth and technology, there are multiple possibilities. In the next book, we plan on having an interaction where you take your iPad out with the video on and through augmented reality, you see this layer of animated pixies appear on a houseplant that's outside your house. At one point, your screen is filled up with leaves. And so you need to make the sound of wind and blow them away and read the rest of the book.
Parmi les possibilités de relier la magie, la terre et la technologie, il y a plusieurs possibilités. Dans le prochain livre, nous avons prévu de vous faire interagir : vous enregistrez une vidéo avec votre iPad et à travers la réalité augmentée, vous voyez cette couche de fées animées qui apparait sur cette plante qui est devant chez vous. A un moment, votre écran est plein de feuilles. Et il faut faire le bruit du vent pour les faire disparaitre et lire le reste du livre.
We're moving, we're all moving here, to a world where the forces of nature come closer together to technology, and magic and technology can come closer together. We're harnessing energy from the sun. We're bringing our children and ourselves closer to the natural world and that magic and joy and childhood love that we had through the simple medium of a story.
Nous nous dirigeons tous vers un monde où les forces de la nature se rapprochent de la technologie, et la magie et la technologie se rapprochent. Nous exploitons l’énergie du soleil. Nous nous rapprochons et nous rapprochons nos enfants de la nature et de cette magie et cette joie et de ces amours d’enfance que nous avions envers ce simple instrument qu’est le livre.
