Bean bags are awesome. But I see a few people out there who are standing, we've got some over here, and standing takes more work than lounging. Using the Live Strong Organization's online database of weight loss resources, you can calculate that by the time I'm done with this speech, those of you who are standing will have burned 7.5 more calories than those of you who are bean-bagging it. (Laughter) Okay, here's a question, speaking of weight loss, specifically weight, this speech is live. I'm actually here in front of you guys, we're all here together. But this speech is being recorded and it will become a video that people can access all over the world on computers, mobile devices, televisions. I weight about 190 pounds. How much will the video weigh? Asking questions like that is what I do every week on my channel Vsauce. For the last two years, I have been asking really fun questions, mind-boggling questions, and approaching them as sincerely as I can, celebrating scientific concepts and scientists. And I research and write and produce and host and edit and upload and run the social media all by myself, but it's not lonely, because Vsauce has more than 2 million subscribers, and every month, my videos are seen by more than 20 million people. Yeah. (Applause) It's very exciting. I've found that asking a strange question is a great way to get people in, not just people, but fans. And fans are different than just viewers or an audience, because fans want to come back. They subscribe to you on YouTube and they want to watch everything you've made and everything you plan to make in the future because we are curious people and sparking curiosity is great bait. It's a great way to catch a human. And once you've caught them, you have this captive audience that you can, with the goal in mind of answering the question, accidentally teach a lot of things to. So, let's take a look at some of my videos. Here are eight of them. But down here in the lower-right corner, "What Color is a Mirror?" When people see that, it's very difficult not to click, because you think, "Come on, are you serious? How could you possibly answer that question?" Well, so far, 7.6 million people have watched this five-minute video about what color a mirror is. And in that episode, I answer the question and I get a chance to explain what would normally be kind of dry topics: optics, diffuse versus specular reflection, how light works, how light works on the retina, and even the etymology of color terms like white and black. Okay, spoiler alert: mirrors are not clear, they are not silvery, like they're often illustrated. Mirrors, technically speaking, are just a tiny, tiny, little bit ... green. You can demonstrate this by putting two mirrors next to each other, facing so they reflect back and forth forever. Look down that infinite reflection, and it will get dimmer, because some light is lost or absorbed every time, but it will also become greener, because green light, that is light of a wavelength that we perceive as green, is best reflected by most mirrors. Okay, so, how much does a video weigh? Well, when you stream a video onto your computer, that information is temporarily stored using electrons. And the number of electrons on your device won't actually increase or decrease. But it takes energy to store them in one place, and, thanks to our friend Albert Einstein, we know that energy and mass are related. Okay, so here's the thing: let's say you're watching a YouTube video at a really nice resolution, 720p. Assuming a typical bit rate, we can figure that a minute of YouTube video is going to need to involve about 10 million electrons on your device. Plugging all those electrons and the energy it takes to hold them in the correct place for you to see the video, into that formula, we can figure out that one minute of YouTube video increases the mass of your computer by about 10 to the negative 19th grams. Written out, it looks like this. (Whistle) That's like nothing. You could call that nothing, and you wouldn't really get in trouble, because the best scales we've ever invented that we could try to use to actually to detect that change are only accurate to 10 to the negative 9th grams. So, we can't measure it, but we can, like we just did, calculate it. And that's really cool because when I was a kid, my school had two shelves of science books. That was really cool, but I read all of them within, like, two grades, and it was hard to get more books because books are heavy, you need space for them and moving books around is tougher than what we can do today. With numbers that small, I can fit thousands of books on my own little personal electronic reader. I can stream hours and hours and days and days of YouTube video without my computer ever getting measurably heavier. And as information becomes that light, it becomes a lot more democratic, meaning that more teachers and presenters and creators and viewers than ever before can be involved. Right now, on YouTube, there is an explosion of content like this happening. The three Vsauce channels are down there in the corner. But everyone else, all together, collectively, their views dwarf what I can do alone or with the people that I work with, and that is really, really exciting. It turns out that tapping into people's curiosity and responsibly answering their questions is a brilliant way to build fans and an audience and get in viewers. It's even a great way for brands and companies to build trust. So, calculating the weight of a video is kind of a funny question, but I cannot wait to see what we ask and answer next. '튼튼하게 살기'모임의 온라인 다이어트 정보에 따르면 오늘 강연 동안 서 계신 분들이 얼마나 칼로리를 소비했는지 계산해 볼 수 있다고 합니다. 서 계셨던 분들은 쿠션에 기대있던 분들보다 7.5 칼로리 이상 더 소모한다고 합니다. 자, 그럼 질문 하나 할게요. 몸무게 이야기가 나와서 말인데요, 이 강연은 생방송 이거든요. 지금 저는 여러분 앞에 서 있고 우린 다 같이 여기 있고요. 근데 이 강연이 녹화가 되어서 동영상이 될 겁니다. 전 세계 사람들이 보게 되겠죠. 컴퓨터나 휴대 전화나 TV로 말이예요. 제 몸무게는 85킬로그램 정도 됩니다. 그럼 동영상의 무게는 어떻게 될까요? 이런 질문을 하는 것이 제가 비소스(Vsauce)를 통해 매주 하는 일입니다. 지난 2년 간 재미있고 상상을 뛰어 넘는 질문을 던지며 제가 할 수 있는 한 과학적인 개념과 과학자들에게 예의를 갖추고 진심을 다해 다가갔습니다. 조사하고 글을 써서 방송을 기획했고 진행과 편집, 동영상 업로드 그리고 SNS 운영을 혼자했습니다. 하지만 절대 외롭지는 않았습니다. 비소스에는 200만명 이상의 자막 제작자들이 있고 매달 2천만명이 넘는 사람들이 제 동영상을 보거든요 네 정말 신나는 일이예요. 요상한 질문을 하는게 사람들의 관심을 끄는 좋은 방법 이라는 것을 배웠습니다. 그냥 관심이 아니라 팬을 만드는 방법이라고 해야겠군요. 팬은 시청자나 관람객과는 좀 다릅니다. 왜냐하면 팬은 다시 오고 싶어 하거든요. 유투브에 가입하고 제가 만든 모든 것을 보고 앞으로 만들려고 기획 중인 것도 알고 싶어 합니다. 호기심이 많고 관심있기 때문이예요. 이 호기심이야 말로 완벽한 미끼입니다. 사람들을 낚기에 딱 좋아요. 한 번 사람들을 낚고 나면 잡아놓은 관객을 가지고 원래 질문에 답변을 하면서 자연스럽게 여러가지를 가르칠 수 있습니다. 제 동영상들을 좀 보여드릴까요. 8개 동영상 보이시죠. 오른쪽 제일 아래쪽에 보시면 거울은 무슨 색일까? 하는 동영상이 있습니다. 네티즌들은 이걸 보면 클릭하지 않을 수가 없어요. "무슨 소리야? 저 질문이 말이나 돼?" 이러면서요. 이제까지 760만명의 사람들이 이 5분짜리 동영상을 봤고 저는 질문에 답을 제시하면서 딱딱하게 보이는 여러가지 주제를 자연스럽게 이야기했습니다. 광학이라든지, 확산 반사와 거울 반사, 빛은 어떻게 작용하는지. 망막에 빛이 작용하는 방법 하얀색, 검정색과 같은 색 이름의 어원까지도 말이죠. 훼방꾼 주의! 거울은 투명하지 않습니다. 보통 그림에 나오는 것처럼 거울이 은색은 아닙니다. 정확하게 말하자면 거울은 아주아주 굉장히 조금 초록색입니다. 두 거울을 마주 보게 놓아보면 이를 확인할 수 있어요. 양쪽의 거울은 서로 비추면서 상이 계속 반복될 겁니다. 그 깊은 거울 속 상을 자세히 보면 반사 될 때마다 빛이 사라지고 흡수되기 때문에 점점 흐릿해지는 걸 관찰할 수 있습니다. 또한 점점 초록색으로 변할 겁니다. 초록색, 그러니까 우리가 초록색이라고 느끼는 그 빛의 파장이 거울에 가장 잘 반사되거든요. 자 그럼 다시 본론으로 돌아와서 동영상의 무게는 어떻게 될까요? 집에서 인터넷 동영상을 실시간으로 재생하면 그 영상의 정보가 전자를 사용하여 일시적으로 저장됩니다. 하지만 재생하고 있는 컴퓨터의 전자 수는 늘어나거나 줄어들지는 않을 겁니다. 그래도 어딘가에 무언가를 저장하려면 에너지가 필요하죠. 우리의 친구 아인슈타인이 알려준 것 처럼 에너지와 질량은 밀접한 관계가 있지요 자, 잘 생각해봐요. 유투브 동영상을 보고있다고 합시다. 해상도도 엄청 좋구요, 한 720p 정도? 속도는 뭐 평범하다고 하면 유투브 동영상 1분은 1000만개의 전자가 필요하게 됩니다. 1,000만개의 전자가 필요하게 됩니다. 그 전자를 모두 집어넣고 우리가 볼 수 있도록 올바른 장소에 전자를 저장하는데 필요한 에너지를 저 공식에 대입하면 1분 짜리 유투브 동영상은 컴퓨터의 질량을 얼마나 늘어나게 하느냐 바로 10의 마이너스 19제곱 그램입니다. 적어보면 이렇게 되고요. 이건 아무것도 없는거나 마찬가지예요. 저건 정말 없다고 말해도 됩니다. 그래도 전혀 상관 없어요. 사람이 발명한 저울들 중에서 변화를 감지할 수 있는 최소의 무게가 바로 10의 마이너스 9제곱 그램이거든요. 그러니까, 절대 잴 수 없어요. 하지만, 방금 우리가 했던 것 처럼 계산해 볼 수는 있지요. 멋지지 않습니까? 제가 어릴 때, 학교에 과학 책장이 2개 있었습니다. 그것도 물론 좋았어요. 문제는 제가 그걸 2년 만에 다 읽었다는 거죠. 그리고 책을 더 구하기도 어려웠고요 왜냐하면 책은 무겁고 꽂아 놓을 장소도 필요하고 옮기는데 힘도 들거든요. 지금 우리가 할 수 있는 것과는 비교도 안되죠. 저렇게 작은 무게라면 수 천권의 책을 아주 작은 전자책 리더기에 담을 수 있고 몇 시간이든 몇 일이든 컴퓨터가 눈에 띄게 무거워지지 않고도 동영상을 실시간 재생 할 수 있어요. 이렇게 정보가 가벼워지면서 더 평등하고 민주적인 사회가 되는 거죠. 더 많은 선생님들과 진행자, 제작자와 시청자들이 서로 긴밀히 연관되거든요. 요즘 유투브를 보면 어마어마한 양의 콘텐츠들이 쏟아져 나오면서 이 일이 현실화 되고 있습니다. 비소스 채널 3가지가 저 쪽 코너에 있네요 하지만 다른 사람들의 것들을 모두 다 합해 봐도 저 혼자 혹은 제 주변 사람들과 하는 것에 비해서 정말 별것 아니게 보인다는 사실이 너무나 신나고 즐겁습니다. 다른 사람의 호기심을 자극하고 그 호기심에 책임감을 가지고 답을 제시하는 것은 시청자와 팬을 늘리고 새로운 사람들을 끌어들이는 훌륭한 방법입니다. 브랜드나 회사의 신뢰도를 높이는 데에도 매우 효과적입니다. 브랜드나 회사의 신뢰도를 높이는 데에도 매우 효과적입니다. 동영상의 무게를 재는 것은 약간 재미있는 문제이지만 그에 이어서 우리가 질문하고 답변하면서 펼쳐질 세상이 저는 너무나 궁금하군요. 매번 시청해 주셔서 감사합니다.
