In a world too keen on constantly moving on- ideally, at a pace faster than the speed of light-, how does profit compeed with environmental protection when it comes to our priorities? As the climate emergency intensifies, oil and gas companies are going to ever more extreme lengths to uncover remaining reserves of fossil fuels. In Greece, this exploration programme includes targeting pristine marine environments and untouched areas of natural beauty, which are under dire threat of pollution and despoliation. Artificial Intelligence is a key tool in this exploration, and exemplifies what happens when new technological tools are turned against human interests. In his talk on the TEDxPatras 2019 stage, James Bridle explores the current state of Artificial Intelligence, its impact on Greece and the natural environment, and alternatives to our present course.
