الفكرة التي اريد ان اتحدث عنها اليوم هي عبارة عن نوع جديد من المدارس و التي ستغير كثيرا من تفكيرنا التقليدي حول الهدف من المدارس و كيفية عملها و قد تفتح احداها قريبا في الحي الذي تسكن فيه. ومصدر تلك المدارس هي منظمة تسمى "مؤسسة الشباب" و التي عبر عدة عقود توصلت الى العديد من الاختراعات في مجال التعليم، مثل الجامعة المفتوحة و اشياء اخرى كالمدارس المطورة، مدارس رجال الاعمال الاجتماعيين، الجامعات الصيفية و مدارس كل شئ
What I want to talk about today is one idea. It's an idea for a new kind of school, which turns on its head much of our conventional thinking about what schools are for and how they work. And it might just be coming to a neighborhood near you soon. Where it comes from is an organization called the Young Foundation, which, over many decades, has come up with many innovations in education, like the Open University and things like Extended Schools, Schools for Social Entrepreneurs, Summer Universities and the School of Everything.
قبل ٥ اعوام تساءلنا ما هي اهم الاشياء التي تحتاج الى الاختراع في مجال التدريس هنا في المملكة المتحدة و شعرنا ان الاولوية القصوى هي بان نجمع معا نوعين من المشاكل الاولى تتمثل في عدد الكبير من المراهقين الذين يشعرون بملل و الذين ببساطة لا يحبون المدرسة، و لم نجد اي علاقة بين ما تعلموه في المدارس و بين اعمالهم المستقبلية. و الثانية في ارباب العمل الذين ظلوا يشكون بان الطلاب المتخرجين من المدارس لم يكونوا مهيئين للعمل الجاد، و لم يكن لديهم السلوك و الخبره اللازمين.
And about five years ago, we asked what was the most important need for innovation in schooling here in the U.K. And we felt the most important priority was to bring together two sets of problems. One was large numbers of bored teenagers who just didn't like school, couldn't see any relationship between what they learned in school and future jobs. And employers who kept complaining that the kids coming out of school weren't actually ready for real work, didn't have the right attitudes and experience.
لذلك نحاول ان نسال ما نوع المدارس التي ستصارع من اجل ابقاء المراهقين، و ليس من اجل اخراجهم؟ و بعد مئات من المحادثات مع المراهقين و المدرسين و الاباء و ارباب العمل و المدارس من برغواي الى استراليا، و بعد الاطلاع على بعض البحوث الاكاديمية، و التي اظهرت مدى اهمية ما يسمى اليوم ب المهارات غير المعرفية (مهارات التحفيز، المرونة) تلك المهارات هي بنفس القدر من الاهمية التي تتمتع بها المهارات المعرفية (المهارات الاكاديمية الرسمية) و قد توصلنا الى حل، و هو حل بسيط من ناحية، و اطلقنا عليه اسم "المدرسة الاستوديو" و سميناها بالمدرسة الاستوديو و ذلك بالعودة الى الفكرة الاصلية في عصر النهضة حيث يندمج العمل مع التعليم. نعمل من خلال التعليم، و نتعلم من خلال العمل. و تتمتع التصميم التي توصلنا اليها بالصفات التالية.
And so we try to ask: What kind of school would have the teenagers fighting to get in, not fighting to stay out? And after hundreds of conversations with teenagers and teachers and parents and employers and schools from Paraguay to Australia, and looking at some of the academic research, which showed the importance of what's now called non-cognitive skills -- the skills of motivation, resilience -- and that these are as important as the cognitive skills -- formal academic skills -- we came up with an answer, a very simple answer in a way, which we called the Studio School. And we called it a studio school to go back to the original idea of a studio in the Renaissance where work and learning are integrated. You work by learning, and you learn by working. And the design we came up with had the following characteristics.
اولا كان هدفنا المدارس الصغيرة، من 300 الى 400 تلميذ، ما بين اعمار 14 الى 19 عام، 80 بالمائة من المنهاج الدراسي تقريبا يتم تدريسها ليس من خلال الجلوس في الفصول الدراسية و لكن من خلال الحياة الواقعية، المشاريع التطبيقية، العمل عبر المجموعة مع الشركات التجارية، المنظمات غير الحكومية و جهات اخرى. و ان يكون لكل تلميذ مدرب و مدرسين ايضا، و سيكون لديهم جداول زمنية تشبه في ذلك الى حد بعيد بيئة العمل الخاصة التي تسود في الشركات. و كل ذلك سيتم عمله في اطار النظام التعليمي العام، و يتم تمويله من الموازنة العامة، لكنه يدار بشكل مستقل. و كل ذلك من دون اي تكاليف اضافية، او اختيار، و اتاحة المجال امام التلاميذ للالتحاق بالجامعة، حتى وان اراد العديد منهم ان يصبحوا أصحاب اعمال فيكون لديهم مهن يدوية ايضا. خلفها كان عبارة عن افكار بسيطة جدا ان معظم المراهقين يتعلمون الاشياء بشكل افضل من خلال التطبيق العملي و يتعلمون بشكل افضل كفريق و يتعلمون بشكل افضل من خلال التطبيق العملي بعكس غالبية المدارس و طريقة عملها.
First of all, we wanted small schools -- about 300, 400 pupils -- 14 to 19 year-olds, and critically, about 80 percent of the curriculum done not through sitting in classrooms, but through real-life, practical projects, working on commission to businesses, NGO's and others. That every pupil would have a coach, as well as teachers, who would have timetables much more like a work environment in a business. And all of this will be done within the public system, funded by public money, but independently run. And all at no extra cost, no selection, and allowing the pupils the route into university, even if many of them would want to become entrepreneurs and have manual jobs as well. Underlying it was some very simple ideas that large numbers of teenagers learn best by doing things, they learn best in teams and they learn best by doing things for real -- all the opposite of what mainstream schooling actually does.
و الان فقد كانت تلك فكرة جيدة، و انتقلنا الى مرحلة النموذج السريع. و قمنا بتجربته، في البداية في لوتن، المعروفة بمطارها و ليس هناك شئ اخر، اني اخشى ... و في بلاك بول المشهورة بشواطئها و بالسياحة ماذا وجدنا هناك ؟ كثير من الاشياء الخاطئة و قد قمنا بتصحيحها ... و لكننا وجدنا ان الشباب كانوا يحبونها و قد وجودوها محفزة و مشوقة اكثر من التعليم التقليدي. و ربما الاهم من ذلك كله، انه بعد مضي عامين عندما صدرت نتائج الامتحانات، الطلاب الذين شملتهم تلك التجارب الميدانية و الذين كانوا في اسفل القائمة من حيث الاداء قد قفزوا الى الصدارة ... في الواقع الى اوائل قائمة المتصدرين من حيث الاداء من حيث شهادات الثانوية العامة و هو نظام التقييم البريطاني.
Now that was a nice idea, so we moved into the rapid prototyping phase. We tried it out, first in Luton -- famous for its airport and not much else, I fear -- and in Blackpool -- famous for its beaches and leisure. And what we found -- and we got quite a lot of things wrong and then improved them -- but we found that the young people loved it. They found it much more motivational, much more exciting than traditional education. And perhaps most important of all, two years later when the exam results came through, the pupils who had been put on these field trials who were in the lowest performing groups had jumped right to the top -- in fact, pretty much at the top decile of performance in terms of GCSE's, which is the British marking system.
لا عجب ققد اثر ذلك على بعض الناس ان يظنوا باننا نجهز لشئ ما. وزير التعليم و هو في لندن جنوبا وصفه نفسه بانه "من كبار المعجبين" كما ان منظمات الاعمال اعتقدت باننا كنا نجهز لشئ ما فيما يخص طريقة اعدادنا للاطفال بشكل افضل لمواجهة الحياة الواقعية التي نعيشها اليوم. و فعلا فان رئيس الغرف التجارية قد اصبح اليوم رئيسا لمجلس ادارة اتحاد المدارس الاستوديو و لا تقتصر مساعدته على الاعمال الكبيرة فحسب و لكنها ايضا تشمل الاعمال الصغيرة في عموم البلاد.
Now not surprisingly, that influenced some people to think we were onto something. The minister of education down south in London described himself as a "big fan." And the business organizations thought we were onto something in terms of a way of preparing children much better for real-life work today. And indeed, the head of the Chambers of Commerce is now the chairman of the Studio Schools Trust and helping it, not just with big businesses, but small businesses all over the country.
بدأنا بمدرستين. و أرتفع هذا العدد الى 10. و نتوقع ان يرتفع العدد الى 35 مدرسة في العام القادم في عموم انحاء انجلترا، و هناك 40 منطقة اخرى ترغب في افتتاح مدارس خاصة بهم و يعد ذلك انتشار سريع لهذه الفكرة. من المدهش ان كل ذلك حدث بدون تغطية اعلامية تقريبا. حدث كل ذلك دون ان تكون هناك تكاليف كبيرة خلف هذا العمل. و انتشرت الفكرة بشكل كلي تقريبا من خلال انتقال الكلام بين الناس، كالعدوى بين المدرسين، الاباء، و الناس المنتمين الى قطاع التعليم. و انتشرت بسبب قوة الفكرة... فالفكرة البسيطة جدا جدا عن قلب النظام التعليمي على راسه و وضع الاشياء التي كانت جانبية، كالعمل في مجموعات، القيام بمشاريع تطبيقية، ووضعها في صميم النظام التعليمي، بدلا من الجوانب.
We started with two schools. That's grown this year to about 10. And next year, we're expecting about 35 schools open across England, and another 40 areas want to have their own schools opening -- a pretty rapid spread of this idea. Interestingly, it's happened almost entirely without media coverage. It's happened almost entirely without big money behind it. It spread almost entirely through word of mouth, virally, across teachers, parents, people involved in education. And it spread because of the power of an idea -- so the very, very simple idea about turning education on its head and putting the things which were marginal, things like working in teams, doing practical projects, and putting them right at the heart of learning, rather than on the edges.
يوجد اليوم نوع مختلف تماما من المدارس الجديدة و التي ستفتح ابوابها هذا الخريف هذه مدرسة في يورك شير و التي في الحقيقة سيدرس بها ابن اخي و هي تركز على صناعتي الاعلام و الابداع. و بعضها تركز على الرعاية الصحية، السياحة، الهندسة و بعض المجالات الاخرى.
Now there's a whole set of new schools opening up this autumn. This is one from Yorkshire where, in fact, my nephew, I hope, will be able to attend it. And this one is focused on creative and media industries. Other ones have a focus on health care, tourism, engineering and other fields.
نعتقد باننا بصدد عمل شئ ما و لم يصل حد الكمال بعد و لكن نعتقد ان تلك الفكرة يمكن ان تغير من حياة الالاف، بل ربما الملايين من المراهقين الذين فعلا ضجروا من الدراسة التقليدية. فهي لا تحفزهم. انهم ليسوا مثلكم. فهم لا يجلسون في صفوف و لا يستمعون لاشياء تلقى عليهم ساعة تلو الاخرى يريدون ان يقومون بعمل اشياء، يريدون ان تتسخ اياديهم، يريدون ان يكون التعليم واقعي املي ان يستطيع بعض منكم العمل على مساعدتنا.
We think we're onto something. It's not perfect yet, but we think this is one idea which can transform the lives of thousands, possibly millions, of teenagers who are really bored by schooling. It doesn't animate them. They're not like all of you who can sit in rows and hear things said to you for hour after hour. They want to do things, they want to get their hands dirty, they want education to be for real. And my hope is that some of you out there may be able to help us.
نشعر باننا في بداية رحلة من التجارب و التطوير لتحويل فكرة المدرسة الاستوديو الى شئ من الحاضر، و ليست كخيار عالمي لجميع الاطفال و لكن على الاقل كخيار لبعض الاطفال في جميع انحاء العالم امل ان يستطيع البعض منكم على الاقل مساعدتنا في تحقيق ذلك
We feel we're on the beginning of a journey of experiment and improvement to turn the Studio School idea into something which is present, not as a universal answer for every child, but at least as an answer for some children in every part of the world. And I hope that a few of you at least can help us make that happen.
