Upatmi nu le pa hna, TED ahhin thithruainak le cawlcanghnak
Ladies and gentlemen, at TED we talk a lot about leadership
thawkning tampi kan chim ve.
and how to make a movement.
Cuca'h, cawlcanghnak thawkning hram in dongh tiang
So let's watch a movement happen, start to finish,
minute 3 chungah zoh u sih
in under three minutes
i, cu chungin cawnnak ilak hna u sih.
and dissect some lessons from it.
Ahmasaah, nan hngalh bangin
First, of course you know,
hruaitu nih intuarnak caah ralthatnak aherh.
a leader needs the guts to stand out and be ridiculed.
Zohmanh, a tuahmi hi zulh a fawite.
What he's doing is so easy to follow.
Hi ahhin a zultu hmasa nih biapi thil a tuah;
Here's his first follower with a crucial role;
Hnuzulh dan kha hawidang a hmuhsak hna.
he's going to show everyone else how to follow.
Amah cu hruaitu nih hruaitu bangin a upat kan hmuh;
Now, notice that the leader embraces him as an equal.
Atu cu hruaitu kong asi ti lai lo;
Now it's not about the leader anymore;
Anmah kong asi lai, atammi.
it's about them, plural.
Zoh, a hawidang a kawh cang hna,
Now, there he is calling to his friends.
Nan hngalh khawh ahcun, apakhatnak zultu
Now, if you notice that the first follower
zei ah rel lomi santlailo dirhmun ah chiah asi khi.
is actually an underestimated form of leadership in itself.
Hitin um khawh dingah ralthatnak aherh.
It takes guts to stand out like that.
hmasabik hruaitu khi hawidang hna hruaitu ah sertu taktak cu asi.
The first follower is what transforms a lone nut into a leader.
(Nihthawng)
(Laughter)
(Kutbenghthawng)
(Applause)
Cun, tucu pahnihnak zultu a ra cang.
And here comes a second follower.
Tucu, santlailo pahnih an um cang--
Now it's not a lone nut, it's not two nuts --
Pathum cu mibu an si cang, i mibu cu thawngpang a si.
three is a crowd, and a crowd is news.
Cucaah, cawlcanghnak cu zapi he aa san.
So a movement must be public.
Hruaitu lawng siloin zultu hna hmaisuam ve zong abiapi,
It's important to show not just the leader, but the followers,
zeicatiah, zultuthar nih zultu hmasa hna an izohchunh hna.
because you find that new followers emulate the followers, not the leader.
Hi, an tam deuh thluahmah cang, tlawmpal ah,
Now, here come two more people, and immediately after,
mi pathum an ichap cang.
three more people.
Thazang a cak tuk cang, tlauh khawh asi tilo.
Now we've got momentum. This is the tipping point.
Tucu, cawlcanghnak a thawk cang.
Now we've got a movement.
(Nihthawng)
(Laughter)
Si, zohhmanh, mi an tam deuh ahcun,
So, notice that, as more people join in,
hna a ngam deuh suaumau.
it's less risky.
Tuandeuh ah a thu sasawhmi hna kha,
So those that were sitting on the fence before
itel ve an duh cang.
now have no reason not to.
An thiamtuk rih men lai lo, nihsawh an si lai lo.
They won't stand out, they won't be ridiculed,
nain khulhrang in an ti ahcun, zapi lakah an itel ve ko lai.
but they will be part of the in-crowd if they hurry.
(Nihthawng)
(Laughter)
Cuticun, minute tlawmpal hnuah,
So, over the next minute,
zapi lakah an ipeih thluahmah na hmuh lai
you'll see all of those that prefer to stick with the crowd
itel ve lo tu kha an duh ti lai lo.
because eventually they would be ridiculed for not joining in.
Hihi cawlcanghnak thawkning cu asi.
And that's how you make a movement.
Asi, hi chungin cawnnak ilak u sih.
But let's recap some lessons from this.
Hmasaah, amah lawng in a dir i ankgi loin a lammi
So first, if you are the type,
bantuk na si ahcun.
like the shirtless dancing guy that is standing alone,
Zultu hmasa pawl kha tlukruannak in na hruai hna aherh kha philh hlah. Afiang. Cawlcanghnak kong asi, nangmah kong asi lo. (Nihthawng) Si, cawn/ilak ding taktak kan hrialh sual kho men.
remember the importance of nurturing your first few followers as equals so it's clearly about the movement, not you. (Laughter) Okay, but we might have missed the real lesson here.
Abiapibik kan cawn hnga dingmi-- na hngalh kho maw?-- cu thithruainak cu thangthatnak asi. Asi, a thawk hmasatu cu angki hruklopa asi i amah cu lawmh asi ko lai, nain zulhtu hna nunthlentu taktak cu zultu hmasa khi dakaw asi. i, hruaitu kan si dih aherh timi cawnpiaknak hi sullam a ngeih tuk then lai lo.
The biggest lesson, if you noticed -- did you catch it? -- is that leadership is over-glorified. Yes, it was the shirtless guy who was first, and he'll get all the credit, but it was really the first follower that transformed the lone nut into a leader. So, as we're told that we should all be leaders, that would be really ineffective.
Cawlcanghnak thawk nai timh taktak ahcun zulh ding ralthatnak ngei law, zulhning zong cawnpiak hna. Cun, santlailo nih thiltha pakhatkhat an tuah ahcun, zultu tha ah ser khawh izuam colh. Cun, hibantuk tuahnak hmunhma thabik cu TED asi.
If you really care about starting a movement, have the courage to follow and show others how to follow. And when you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to be the first one to stand up and join in. And what a perfect place to do that, at TED.
Lawmtuk. Kutbenghthawng.
Thanks. (Applause)
