In her talk, Carla Lewis-Miles uses an antidote from her childhood to help her community create dialogue and ease historical tensions between African American Communities and the University of Florida located in her hometown of Gainesville. Carla suggests moving past current protests over luxury student housing in distressed neighborhoods towards partnership with the University of Florida instead. Carla implores the University of Florida, local governments and community organizations to create a collaborative model of development that can set an example for other college towns experiencing gentrification.
