Oppressive systems, such as the Hasidic community that Beatrice was born into, convince us that it is selfish and wrong to pay attention to our own needs, but in fact making those choices is the key to overthrowing the power structure. This is true for all oppressive systems. In this talk, Beatrice discusses the concept of fighting oppressive systems with the mindset that hard work and sacrifice are the answer. Transformative progress actuality happens when individuals make choices that serve their personal needs first.
Beatrice shares her experience of leaving her Hasidic marriage in the middle of the night with her four youngest of ten children and how that was the first step in paying attention to her own needs and the beginning of overthrowing an oppressive system.
