Hi I'm Andrea Gibson and this is my poem "The Nutritionist." The nutritionist said I should eat root vegetables Said if I could get down 13 turnips a day I would be grounded, rooted. Said my head would not keep flying away to where the darkness lives. The psychic told me my heart carries too much weight Said for 20 dollars she’d tell me what to do I handed her the twenty, she said “stop worrying darling, you will find a good man soon.” The first psychotherapist said I should spend 3 hours a day sitting in a dark closet with my eyes closed and my ears plugged. I tried it once but couldn’t stop thinking about how gay it was to be sitting in the closet. The yogi told me to stretch everything but truth, said focus on the outbreaths, said everyone finds happiness if they can care more about what they can give than what they get. The pharmacist said klonopin, lamictil, lithium, Xanax. The doctor said an antipsychotic might help me forget what the trauma said The trauma said don’t write this poem. Nobody wants to hear you cry about the grief inside your bones But my bones said “Tyler Clementi dove into the Hudson River convinced he was entirely alone.” My bones said “write the poem.” To the lamplight. Considering the river bed. To the chandelier of your fate hanging by a thread. To everyday you could not get out of bed. To the bulls eye of your wrist To anyone who has ever wanted to die. I have been told, sometimes, the most healing thing we can do- Is remind ourselves over and over and over Other people feel this too The tomorrow that has come and gone And it has not gotten better When you are half finished writing that letter to your mother that says “I swear to God I tried” But when I thought I hit bottom, it started hitting back There is no bruise like the bruise loneliness kicks into your spine So let me tell you I know there are days it looks like the whole world is dancing in the streets when you break down like the doors of their looted buildings You are not alone and wondering who will be convicted of the crime of insisting you keep loading your grief into the chamber of your shame You are not weak just because your heart feels so heavy I have never met a heavy heart that wasn’t a phone booth with a red cape inside Some people will never understand the kind of superpower it takes for some people to just walk outside Some days I know my smile looks like the gutter of a falling house But my hands are always holding tight to the ripchord of believing A life can be rich like the soil Make food of decay Turn wound into highway Pick me up in a truck with that bumper sticker that says “it is no measure of good health to be well adjusted to a sick society” I have never trusted anyone with the pulled back bow of my spine the way I trust the ones who come undone at the throat Screaming for their pulse to find the fight to pound Four nights before Tyler Clementi jumped from the George Washington bridge I was sitting in a hotel room in my own town Calculating exactly what I had to swallow to keep a bottle of sleeping pills down What I know about living is the pain is never just ours Every time I hurt I know the wound is an echo So I keep a listening for the moment when the grief becomes a window When I can see what I couldn’t see before, through the glass of my most battered dream, I watched a dandelion lose its mind in the wind and when it did, it scattered a thousand seeds. So the next time I tell you how easily I come out of my skin, don’t try to put me back in just say here we are together at the window aching for it to all get better but knowing there is a chance our hearts may have only just skinned their knees knowing there is a chance the worst day might still be coming let me say right now for the record, I’m still gonna be here asking this world to dance, even if it keeps stepping on my holy feet you- you stay here with me, okay? You stay here with me. 안녕하세요. 저는 안드레아 깁슨이며, 제가 쓴 시 "영양사"입니다. 영양사가 내게 말했다. 나는 뿌리채소를 먹어야 한다고. 마치 하루에 순무를 13개씩 먹을 수 있다면, 내가 땅에 발붙이고, 정착할 것이라고. 내 머리가 어둠이 사는 곳으로 날아가버리지 않을 것이라고. 점쟁이는 내게 말했다. 너무 많은 마음의 짐을 지고 있다고. 20달러를 낸다면 내게 해결책을 준다고 했다. 20달러를 건네었고, 그녀는 말했다. "걱정 좀 그만해, 자기. 곧 좋은 남자 만나게 될 거야." 첫 심리치료사는 말했다. 내가 매일 3시간씩 어두운 옷장 속에 있어야 한다고 눈은 감은 채 귀는 막은 채 한 번 시도해봤지만 이런 생각을 멈출 수 없었다. 이 옷장에 앉아있는 게 어째서 즐거울 수 있는 건가. 요가 스승은 말했다. 진실 외의 모든 것을 왜곡해보라고 내뱉는 숨에 집중하라고 모두가 행복해진다고 말했다. 가진 것보다 줄 수 있는 것에 더 마음 쓰기만 하면. 약사는 말했다. 클레나 제 팜, 라모트리 진, 리튬 ,알프라졸람 의사는 말했다. 항정신병 약물이 트라우마의 속삭임을 잊게 해줄 거라고 트라우마는 말했다. 이 시를 쓰지 마. 누구도 네가 우는 걸 듣고 싶지 않아. 네 뼛속에서부터 나오는 슬픔을 그러나 내 뼈는 말했다. "타일러 클레멘티는 철저히 혼자라는 생각으로 허드슨강에 뛰어들었어. " 내 뼈는 말했다. "이 시를 써." 강바닥을 기리는 등불을 위해서. 한 가닥 실에 매달려 있는 네 신념의 샹들리에를 위해서 네가 침대에서 빠져나올 수 없었던 모든 나날을 위해서 네 손목의 과녁을 위해서 이제껏 죽기를 원했던 모두를 위해서. 주변 사람들은 우리가 할 수 있는 최선의 치료가 스스로에게 반복, 반복, 반복하여 되뇌는 거라고 한다. 다른 사람들도 이런 걸 느꼈고 내일이 올 거고 또 지나갈 거라고. 하지만 그래도 나아지는 건 없다. "엄마 나도 노력했어요."라는 내용의 편지를 반 정도 써 내려가도. 내가 바닥까지 내려갔다 믿었을 때, 그 바닥도 나를 가만두지 않았다. 뼈에 사무치는 외로움이 남기는 상처만큼 더 아픈 상처는 존재하지 않는다. 그러니 그대에게 말해주겠다. 온 세상이 길에 나와서 춤을 추는 것 같은데 그대만이 약탈된 건물의 문 마냥 너덜너덜해졌을 때가 있다. 그대는 혼자가 아니다. 누군가 당신으로 하여금 비통함을 수치의 상자에 넣게 강요하는가를 궁금해하는 건 당신만이 아니다. 그대는 약하지 않다. 단지 당신의 심장이 무겁게 느껴질 뿐이다. 내가 만난 모든 무거운 심장의 주인들은 전화부스 속에 있는 영웅들과 같다. 어떤 사람들은 결코 이해하지 못할 것이다. 어떤 이들에겐 밖으로 걸어 나오는 게 초능력이라는 걸. 가끔 나의 미소가 무너져가는 집의 빗물받이처럼 기울어 있음을 안다. 그러나 나의 손은 항상 믿음의 낙하산을 꽉 쥐고 있다. 삶이 흙처럼 풍요로울 수 있다고 믿는다. 음식을 썩게 하고. 구불구불한 상처를 고속도로처럼 필 수 있다고. 범퍼 스티커에 이런 말이 쓰인 트럭에 나를 태워달라. "병든 사회에 잘 적응했다고 해서 건강하다는 뜻은 아니다." 나는 내 척추의 활시위를 당기고 있는 사람을 믿지 않는다. 내가 믿는 사람들은 죽음의 문턱까지 갔다가 맥박에게 다시 뛰라고 목 놓아 소리칠 줄 아는 사람들. 타일러 클레멘티가 조지 워싱턴교에서 뛰어내리기 4일 전 나는 동네의 호텔방에 앉아 있었고 수면제 한 통을 다 먹으려면 얼마나 많은 물을 마셔야 할지 세고 있었다. 삶에 대해 내가 아는 것은 고통은 결코 우리의 것만이 아니란 거다. 내가 다칠 때마다 상처는 메아리친다. 그러니 나는 비통함이 창문이 되는 순간을 들으려 한다. 그 전엔 내가 볼 수 없었던 것을 나 자신의 가장 만신창이인 꿈의 창문 너머로 볼 수 있었을 때, 나는 민들레 한 송이가 바람에 자신의 마음을 실어 보내는 걸 보았다. 그때에 꽃은 천 개의 씨앗으로 흩날렸다. 다음번에 내가 아무리 쉬이 내 껍질을 깨어 나온대도 나를 다시 그 속에 되돌려 놓으려 말아라. 그냥 여기 창문 앞에 함께 있자고 말해 달라. 아픈 것이 나아지기를 기다리며 그러나 우리의 심장에게 작은 생체기가 생길지도 모른다고 생각하며 앞으로 더 어려운 시기가 다가올지도 모른다고 생각하며 여기에서 지금 분명히 말한다. 나는 여전히 이곳에 있을 것이며, 세상에 춤을 추자 청할 것이다. 그가 내 신성한 발을 계속 밟을지라도 그대여, 그대는 여기 나와 함께 있어 달라. 그대는 여기 나와 함께 있어 달라. 저 쓰라린 어둠에 저항하여 그대의 상처를 높이 들며 있어 달라. 그대의 빛나는 간절함 그대의 눈부신 상실의 상처들 친구여 만약 여기에 있어서 우리에게 남는 것이 서로일 뿐일지라도 아 그것이면 과분할지어다. 아 그것이면 충분할지어다. 아 그것은 정말로 정말로 이만하면 충분할지어다. 우리 서로가 서로의 등에 계속해서 속삭여주기에 "살아라."
